It is one of the questions we hear most often: “I would love to learn tango, but I don’t have a dance partner. Can I still come?” The short answer is yes. Here is why.
A dance for two, built by two individuals
Tango is indeed a dance for two, but it is a dance between two people who meet. Before that meeting, each dancer first needs to develop their own skills: coordination, balance, relaxation, body awareness and listening to the music. In short, learning how to feel your body, your emotions and the space around you.
In our classes you develop these skills on your own and with others. And because tango is a social dance, you are expected to dance with different people. That means adapting to other bodies, other styles and other levels.
Connection: finding a shared language
What we call connection is the search to attune our body to someone else’s. We try to understand the other person, to empathise, to find that unique and unrepeatable language of communication, as one of my teachers used to say.
That language does not come from always dancing with the same person. It grows every time you meet someone new on the dance floor.
At TangoMJ, everyone dances with everyone
That is why it is good to come to the classes even if you don’t have a partner. At TangoMJ we rotate partners, everyone dances with everyone, and we mix levels. This way everyone experiences what it is like to dance with someone very different from themselves, and that exercise enriches all of us.
It is true that there will be challenges. It may feel uncomfortable, and at first it may not be very pleasant. But this path is necessary for complete and genuine learning.
Women, take the first step
We know that, culturally, in Europe men dance less than women. We encourage women to start tango anyway: to discover in it their own way of being, their authenticity, their movement and their body awareness, and to free the emotions and sensations around their body.
Two roles, one dance
We also encourage our students to practise both roles from the start. It enriches the learning even more and lets you understand and empathise with what happens on the other side of the dance: what is needed, and what my partner expects from me in each encounter and each movement.
A stronger dance and a stronger community
We believe that by inviting students to mix and try movements with different people, we enrich not only the dance but also the community. Two bodies that empathise and can communicate need fewer words to understand each other.
Don’t wait until you have a partner
So please, don’t stay at home because you don’t have a “dance partner”. With us you will always find someone to dance, practise and learn Argentine tango with.
See our Friday classes in Landgraaf or get in touch with us. We look forward to dancing with you.
